Existing documents are converted to HTML using the Save As Hypertext Markup Language command from the File menu. Within the limits of HTML, Word styles (e.g. Heading 1, Title), direct formatting (bold, italic), forms, bullets, and numbering convert to HTML markup. Pictures and OLE objects are not preserved during conversion to HTML. Existing images may be converted to GIF format for use in HTML document using Microsoft® Imager, or other third-party graphics conversion software. Microsoft Imager is available to registered users of Word for Windows® by contacting Microsoft Sales Information Center at (800) 426-9400.
Internet Assistant provides full HTML Level 2.0 support, including anchor, image, lists, forms, and block and character elements.
HTML Level 2+ elements or proprietary HTML elements can be inserted during authoring and converted unaltered to HTML using the HTML Markup command on the Insert menu.
Web viewing support requires an existing Internet connection, including TCP/IP and Windows Sockets support. Internet connectivity can be obtained separately from an Internet service provider. Internet Assistant, in conjunction with Word, allows you to view documents in HTML, text, and Word, among other file formats; and provides graphic support for GIF, JPEG, TIFF™, BMP, PICT and other formats. Internet Assistant also includes support for FTP and Gopher.
Internet Assistant runs under 16-bit versions of Word for Windows only. Internet Assistant does not operate under Word for Windows NT™ (a 32-bit version of Word). It does, however, operate under Word for Windows (16-bit) running on Windows NT.
With Internet Assistant, users can insert hyperlinks--a "hot-key" of text or graphics that when double-clicked opens another document--into any Word document. This allows the creation and navigation of "webbed" documents using standard Word files over existing networks.
